Let’s talk about a popular vegetable for Thanksgiving—green beans–and what most of you think of when anyone mentions green beans and Thanksgiving in the same sentence. Specifically, gluten-free Green Bean Casserole recipes.

Yes, green beans usually star in green bean casseroles during the holidays. You probably already know that the classic recipe for green bean casserole is not gluten free but that info always bears repeating. The equally important thing to know if you’re a green bean casserole lover is that it’s easy to make a gluten-free version.

Again, if you’d like to do that. Let’s face it. When it comes to green bean casseroles, I’ve found that opinions are usually pretty divided. Some won’t touch this classic holiday recipe and others absolutely adore green bean casserole.

Where do you stand on this important issue? I’m hoping that most of you who are reading will be in the latter category because I’m sharing an updated listing of over 20 Gluten-Free Green Bean Casserole recipes with you today. But if you’re not a fan of the typical green bean casserole, I’m also giving you other delicious ways to enjoy green beans—non-casserole type recipes—on Thanksgiving. Because we need to ensure we’re eating some veggies in addition to all that pie, right? Plus, I have a confession. My family has come to love one of these green bean recipes that is not a casserole. You’ll have to read on to learn which one!

If you’re making your Thanksgiving menu, now is the time to check out these recipes and add one to your menu plan. If you are a person who likes to try recipes first, obviously, you still have time to make one of these recipes.

I know that some readers also like to make Green Bean Casserole again at Christmas or on New Year’s Day. And let’s face it there’s nothing wrong with enjoying Green Bean Casserole—or any excellent green bean dish for that matter—any time of the year!

Plus, I’m sharing some recipes for the “parts” of the casserole today—homemade French fried onions and from scratch “cream of” soups. And I’ll reiterate that if you are a gfe reader who loves green beans, but prefers them in non-casserole form, I’ve got some other wonderful recipes for you as well! Personally, I like some of them far better than the classic Green Bean Casserole recipe.

First, before we get to the recipes, just to err on the side of caution, I want to remind you once again that the traditional green bean casserole recipe, the one made with Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup and French’s Fried Onions, is not gluten free because both of those particular ingredients contain gluten. Some recipes also include soy sauce, which, of course, is also not gluten free.

If you use soy sauce in your recipe, that one is an easy fix, of course. Simply use gluten-free soy sauce or gluten-free tamari. Or you can use coconut aminos, which are a gluten-free and grain-free option that I’ve personally come to prefer over soy sauce.

There are some brands—sometimes even store brands—that offer a gluten-free Cream of Mushroom Soup. During the first few years of being gluten free, I sought out and used those soups. Later I substituted Progress Creamy Mushroom Soup and left out the milk in the recipe because Progresso’s soup offers a less “gelatinous” base and is a larger can (18.5 ounces versus 10.5 ounces) so milk was not needed.

If using a ready-made Cream of Mushroom Soup today, I’d most likely go with Pacific NaturalFoods brand,which comes in 12-ounce cartons. (I refuse to personally consume any General Mills’ products because their “gluten-free” Cheerios continue to make so many ill.)

The French Fried Onions were still an issue, but gfe reader/friend Dena said that she’d used Funyuns as a substitute with good success. So I used those a couple of times and they worked pretty well. Funyuns are not something I normally eat, but once a year, they work just fine.

Several years ago, the news broke that ALDI was offering gluten-free French Fried Onions as part of its Live GFree line. I shared the news on my gfe Facebook page and, goodness, folks got excited!

Admittedly, I was even excited. Sometimes convenience is really nice! Plus as soon as I shared the info, some trusted gluten-free friends shared their reviews and they were really good!

All Live GFree products are certified gluten free to less than 20 ppm by the National Safety Foundation.

One blogger friend, Amanda of A Few Shortcuts, was gracious enough to share the ingredients label of ALDI’s French Fried Onions (shown below) with me.

As you can see, the ingredients are onions, vegetable oil (canola and palm), buckwheat, and salt. Despite its misleading name, buckwheat is a naturally gluten-free grain. It’s actually in the rhubarb family, but its grain-like seeds make it a great grain-free option.

With buckwheat, one does still have to be concerned about cross-contact with gluten grains (just as one does with mainstream oats). That’s why the fact that this product is one of ALDI’s certified gluten-free products is important.

For those who don’t have an ALDI nearby, Dena and another reader, Becky, shared that they’d found another brand of gluten-free French Fried Onions at Ollie’s Bargain Outlet. That brand was Top Taste.

Top Taste is a product of Holland. (The ALDI French Fried Onions are also a product of Holland.) You can see this producthere. Some grocery stores (e.g., Wegmans, HEB) carry it. The ingredients are: “Onions, Vegetable Oil (Canola & Palm), Buckwheat, Salt.”

Sprouts has gluten-free French fried onions with exactly the same ingredients under their own label. (Incidentally, their brand of gluten-free French-fried onions is also available on Amazon.) You know what that makes me think!

I also thought I’d go ahead and share all the phenomenal Gluten-Free Green Bean Casserole recipes that exist that don’t use store-bought French-Fried Onions because not all of us can eat the ingredients in them due to additional food intolerances.

I’ve even read where some folks substitute Ore Ida Tater Tots for French-fried onions when making their green bean casserole. Ore Ida is the originator of Tater Tots and officially only their brand of these much-loved, round potato items can be called Tater Tots. Thankfully, they’re gluten free!

More recently, I’ve learned that some folks like to use potato sticks in place of French-fried onions as their casserole topping. I love that idea! You’ll see one such recipe below. Utz brand potato sticks are gluten free (as I write this) and other brands are as well but always read labels for ingredients as ingredients in products often change.
