Who’s excited for all the pumpkin recipes?! Yep, me too. But do you have a jar of pumpkin pie spice ready to go? If not, time to make a quick batch!

For the longest time I always bought pumpkin pie spice but guys, I do a lot of baking and recipe testing. A jar costs about $4-5 for 1-2 oz. Thats pretty darn expensive just for some some spice when a huge container of cinnamon runs for about the same price!

Last year, I remember I ran out in the midst of testing a crustless pumpkin pie recipe so I figured I could just make some with what I had. Best decision ever because 1. I already had everything on hand, 2. it tastes so much better and 3. it’s crazy inexpensive in comparison to buying it pre-made.

At the time, I didn’t have a set recipe but rather just kinda eyeballed it and threw the spices together. Each time it tasted a bit different but after like, 10 times of DIY-ing it, I noted my favourite version and ratio of spices.

If you a) love all things pumpkin spice, b) want to save money or c) ran out of pumpkin pie spice last minute… then you’re in the right place!

What spices are in pumpkin spice?

After spending an hour looking at different brands of pumpkin pie spice at the grocery store, I’ve come to the conclusion that the top 3 ingredients in store bought ones consist of:

  • cinnamon
  • ginger
  • nutmeg
  • & depending on the brand either all spice OR cloves

What makes this pumpkin spice a little different, more flavourful and warming (IMO) is the addition of cardamom and black pepper. My mom always used cardamom in pumpkin-flavoured desserts. I picked up the black pepper tip from this local vegan restaurant that told me their secret to their pumpkin cornbread was black pepper and since then, I’ve always added a touch of black pepper to my blend.

Simply just add all of the spices into a spice jar and shake it up!

Pumpkin Pie Spice Substitute

When it comes to spices, everyone has their own preference. The beauty of homemade pumpkin spice is that you’re in full control of what you want your pumpkin spice to taste like. Don’t like cloves? Leave it out. Like things a bit more spicy? Bump up the ginger or pepper.

If you’re in a pinch and don’t have all of the ingredients, don’t sweat it! You can still make delicious pumpkin spiced recipes using cinnamon and a touch of nutmeg or ginger if you have it.
