The German-Thai Chamber of Commerceand its cooperating partners inThailandandGermanyonce again have been successful in bringing together a respectable number ofGermanlarge, medium and small companies participating in the forthcomingFifth German Technology Symposium & Exhibition(GTS96) to take place from5-9 November 1996in the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok, Thailand.
Altogether138 companiesand institutes will participate inGTS96, be it with speakers in the symposium, as exhibitors, as users of the contact service or merely as an observer.
In the Symposium, altogether117 technical presentationsby93 companieswill be held. Participation in the various technological sectors is as follows:
- Machinery and plant: 41 lectures
- Electrical engineering: 5 lectures
- Power generation: 17 lectures
- Information and communication: 2 lectures
- Information and communication: 2 lectures
- Transportation: 8 lectures
- Chemicals: 8 lectures
- Environmental protection: 23 lectures
- Product quality, consulting: 7 lectures
- Professional education: 2 lectures
- Reserved: 4 lectures
All lectures will be moderated by experienced Thai expertsto assure excellence in presentation and maximum transfer of technology from theGermanexpert to theThaiaudience.
Full written text of the presentation (in English) will be distributed to all symposium participants prior to the lecture in front of the seminar rooms. Interpretators (Thai/English/German) will be available at all times in the seminar rooms to help out when needed.
On the exhibition side, altogether134 German companieswill show their products (70 companies) and catalogues (64 additional companies). The exhibition will be in thePlenary Halland theMain Foyerof theQueen Sirikit National Convention Centerdirectly next to the 6 seminar rooms. This will facilitate visit of the exhibition by the symposium participants.
The exhibition covers an area of 3,500 sq.m. gross and 1,800 sq.m. net.
Regionwise, most participating companies are seated in the state of
- Northrhine-Westfalia (35)
- Bavaria (22)
- Baden-Württemberg (21)
From the new German states (former East Germany) strongest participation comes from
- Thuringia (10)
- Saxonia (5)
The strong presence of companies from Northrhine-Westfalia reflects such state’s historically strong basis in engineering, machinery and plant for steel manufacture and rolling mills, power generation, as well as all environmental concerns. 18 Thai subsidiaries or affiliates of German companies do also participate.
16 participating German companies, in addition to their participation in symposium and/or exhibition, use the Chamber’s popular Contact Service for identification of qualified and interested importers, distributors, agents, licensees or partners in joint-ventures. They will be accompanied by Chamber’s staff to the Thai companies and assisted by interpreters (if needed) and counterpart officers.
In the previous GTS in 1993 only 6 companies used the Chamber’s Contact Service. The strong increase for this service of GTS96 is proof of the quality of the Chamber’s match-making services for GTS participants.
Four companies request from the Chamber an individual Direct Mailing action, in order to attract Thai companies to their booth.
Mini-participation, however with high PR-exposure, is chosen by those companies, who participate in GTS96 as observers. A full page observer company profile with photo of the executive-in-attendence and invitation to all GTS96 functions is the Chamber’s service to companies with observer status.
Observers use GTS96 to see and make contacts at their own pace without being tied-up in pre-fixed schedules and programs. Observer participation has developped into a popular form of participation. Against the previous GTS in 1993, 13 companies choose this form of participation, which is 12% more than in the previous event.

All Thai co-operating partner organizations will be presented with an own complimentary booth to enable them to inform German and Thai participants on their work and to make valuable new contacts.
On 6 November 1996 an Environment Luncheon and on 7 November 1996 a Business Law Luncheon are planned to enable German and Thai decision makers to inform themselves and exchange information and opinions. A Malaysia Business Opportunities Luncheon will be held on 8 November 1996. All other events can be seen from the attached List of Functions during GTS96.
German companies’ interest in investing in Thailand has never been so strong as today. Whereas all German investment in the Asia Pacific region in 1995 declined by 20% from DM 2 billion (in 1994) to DM 1.6 billion, German investment in Thailand in 1995 went up by 22% from DM 44 million (Bt 743 million) in 1994 to DM 56 million (Bt 951.3 million).
Out of all German investment in Thailand in 1995 67% was investment into the Thai industry; only 32% of German investment during that year went into trade and no investment at all was made in the service sector.
The 126 German companies participating in Symposium and Exhibition of GTS96 are all keen to add new technological ventures and investment to the list. They are participating in GTS96 to enter into negotiations with Thai counterpart companies about projects which they can implement in Thailand together with Thai companies for their both mutual benefit.
