How many times have I said I’m not a baker? Probably every time I try to bake something. But Garrett has mastered the art of cooking his Barlow Chocolate Chip Cookies and you girls have requested the recipe for years, so here it is!

Garrett grew up with his mom using this recipe and I remember the first time I tried these chocolate chip cookies. They were actually the best chocolate chip cookie I had ever tried. They bake with this light layer of brown sugar encrusting the cookie…it’s insane. This year for neighbor gifts we decided to hand out bags of these cookies and I’ve decided that this might be our new neighbor gift tradition.

We partnered with Walmart to gather up all of the ingredients and supplies to create the cutest gift. Garrett baked the cookies and I packaged them all up with this gorgeous thick velvet ribbon and wooden hanging tags I found all at Walmart. In my option, the gift has to look as good as what’s inside and Walmart helped me achieve the perfectly packaged bag of cookies! I stacked the cookies in these long cellophane bags and I love how they turned out.

WHITE STACKING BOWLS

I loaded my cart at Walmart with everything I needed to make the famous Barlow Chocolate Chip Cookies (I think we ended up making 10 batches). I also found some great last minute stocking stuffers – I always wait to grab stocking items and this year I’m happy I don’t have to stress about it! Walmart had everything I needed at such fantastic prices and helped make our neighbor gifts delicious, cute, and really affordable. Grabbing everything at once from Walmart let me spend less time planning and shopping and more time at home baking with Garrett and spending time with the boys.

Onto the cookie recipe! Okay here is the best part…this “secret Barlow Chocolate Chip Cookie’ recipe is actually on the back of the chocolate chip bag. Garrett and I cracked up a few years ago when we found that out because all this time he thought it was this recipe handed down from Grandma to Grandma for years. BUT there are some tweaks to the original recipe that make these chocolate chip cookies absolutely amazing, so if you only follow the recipe on the bag they won’t turn out as good as these ones.

One word of advice – follow these instructions exactly. I haven’t in the past and they just never turned out as good as when Garrett does it. He takes this cookie making very seriously and is super exact when he makes them and they are always perfect.

BARLOW CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

*makes about 5 dozen cookies

Ingredients:

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup Crisco, softened – this is key. Don’t substitute butter, believe me. The crisco is the magic that makes them rise a bit and turn out perfect.
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 cups (12. oz package) semi-sweet chocolate chips – we like to use ½ normal size chocolate chips and ½ mini chocolate chips, and these mini M&M’s would be so fun to throw in too!

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 375 F

In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt

In a large mixing bowl, beat the crisco, sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract until creamy – Garrett mixes his for at least a full minute so that it’s a nice whipped consistency.

Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition

Beat in flour mixture gradually

Mix in chocolate chips

Drop onto ungreased baking sheets by rounded tablespoon – this will endure each cookie looks perfectly round and uniform

Bake 9 to 11 minutes – this depends on your oven but we found the perfect amount of time to be 10 minutes. You want the cookies to just barely be starting to brown on the edges but mostly a light color in the middle. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes, remove to wire racks to cool completely

And that’s it! I promise these cookies will be a hit with anyone who tries them! You can even save this ingredients list to your Walmart mobile account to easily add to your cart whenever you need them.
