New to gardening but ready to grow your own food? Tips to help (& get a great zucchini recipe!) (1)

I have purple/black/red thumbs (or whatever the opposite of green would be!) I kill plants inside of the house, I can’t keep ferns alive in our hanging baskets on the porch, I am horrible with watering, and yet I can grow a garden that our family loves. Really!

  • I use a raised bed (it is SO easy to make, trust me!) with loose, organic, non-disturbed soil. If you have two 3X8 gardens and one trellis, it will feed a family of 3-5 people. Just be sure to leave enough space between your gardens so that they are not causing one to have a shadow on the other.
  • Also, put them in sunlight. They need at least 6 hours of sunlight, every day.

If you want to have climbing vegetables like cucumbers or beans, a trellis is easy to make.

  • Start with Gro-ables pre-packed seeds. They are a new product from Miracle-Gro that make it easy to grow your own food from seeds. This product makes it SO easy to grow your own food, even a first-time gardener will have luck with these. Gro-ables are guarenteed, when used correctly, so you know that you are getting something that is going to work. Plus, they are only $1.29 -$1.49 per packet, so they are a great deal. Check out how to buy groceries tomake healthy and cheap meals. As you’ll see, for $1.29 a pack, you can’t beat that for growing your own food! • When your garden is ready and your seeds are planted, be sure to water the base of your plants 3 times a week for 5 minutes each (do not water the top, get to the base of your plants… Wet leaves will quickly kill your plant (this is why tomato cages are a No-No in gardens. They make it hard for leaves to dry.)
  • DO NOT TRANSPLANT: Plants do not do as well if you transplant them, so plant your Go-ables whereever you plan to leave your plants. The only ones that should be transplanted (bought as a plant at the store and brought home for you to plant into your garden) are tomatoes and cucumbers. Grow the rest from Gro-ables seeds on your own.
  • Do not till your garden. This stirs up the weeds.
  • Plant-tone or worm castings make a good fertilizer, if you feel that you need one. (for one of the gardents, you want 10 lbs. of castings). Oh- and if you need to kill ants, you can get Spinosad. Its organic.
  • My best advice for things to grow:
  1. Rare foods
  2. Things that are expensive at the market
  3. Nutritious foods
  4. Ongoing harvest (ex: fresno)
  5. Space Saving in the garden

New to gardening but ready to grow your own food? Tips to help (& get a great zucchini recipe!) (3)

It is really easy to make… here is my favorite zucchini pie recipe, from my Mom.

Ingredients:
1 package crescent rolls
1 onion (sliced)
2 medium zucchini (sliced, but not peeled)
2 egg yolks (or egg beaters)
1/4 teaspoon of each: garlic powder, basil, oregano
Salt & pepper to taste
package of mozzarella cheese (2 cups)
OPTIONAL: 2 T. mustard (I like it with the mustard, personally!)

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
Saute onion and zucchini in butter in a skillet.
Add 2 egg yolks or you can substitute with egg beaters
Add the seasonings (garlic powder, basil, oregano, salt, pepper)
Add in a package (2 c.) of mozzarella cheese.

Line the pie pan with crescent rolls
If you want to add the mustard, add it here (just spread it on the crescent rolls)
Fill with zucchini/cheese mixture

Bake at 350 for 18-20 minutes

FAQs

What is the best way to grow zucchini? ›

Zucchini needs full sun (at least 6 to 8 hours) and consistently moist soil that is high in organic matter. Some zucchini varieties are vining types that require a trellis or a lot of room to sprawl. There are also bush types suitable for container gardening and small space gardening.

How to keep zucchini plants producing? ›

When the large zucchini form and seeds mature the plants have achieved their goal to reproduce. So they slow down or stop flowering and fruiting. Regular harvesting of smaller fruit keeps the plant in the reproductive mode. You will quickly find the more you pick the more the plant will produce.

What month is best to grow zucchini? ›

We recommend planting zucchini and summer squash from late May to early July, depending on the season's temperatures and rainfall. It's a warm season crop, so it needs warm air, warm soil, and no chance of frost.

Do coffee grounds help zucchini plants? ›

Yes, and yes! Coffee beans are rich in minerals such as magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium. Phosphorus and potassium improve yields, and nitrogen is involved in photosynthesis, which helps plants grow faster. Ground coffee is excellent for both house and garden plants.

Do zucchini need watering every day? ›

Watering Zucchinis

One inch of water per week should suffice, but water more often if the weather is particularly hot and dry. Well-draining soil is a must—if it water pools and remains stagnant around the roots, they will start to rot. Avoid letting your soil dry out; this can increase the risk of blossom end rot.

Can I grow just one zucchini plant? ›

When adding zucchini to your garden, just one plant should do it. And in fact, if planted properly and well-cared for, one plant may even produce more than you can handle on your own. Compared to other common vegetable garden crops, zucchini plants can take up a lot of real estate, but they certainly earn their keep.

Is it cheaper to grow food or buy it? ›

When done correctly, even the smallest backyard plot can produce copious amounts of fruits and vegetables and possibly even a significant saving to the grocery budget. However, it takes time and patience, and a small outlay of money to buy seeds, and tools, if you need them.

Can I grow enough food to feed my family? ›

The first step is to figure out how much of a specific food item your family eats during an average week. Multiply that out by 52, then calculate how much of each crop you need to grow to preserve that amount of food. This will be based on the average yield each of those plants produces.

How do you enrich a garden? ›

Add home-made garden compost, bagged compost or well-rotted manure. As a rule, add a minimum 5cm layer of organic matter over the surface before digging or forking it in. These organic fertilisers are more beneficial to soil bacteria than inorganic compounds.

Should zucchini be planted in rows or hills? ›

A “hill” of three or four seeds sown close together is another way to plant squash in the garden. Allow five to six feet between hills. You can plant bush types, with very short vines, in closely spaced hills, or in closely spaced rows, with only two to three feet between rows or hills.

Do zucchini like morning sun or afternoon sun? ›

Plant in Full Sun

Zucchinis need to be planted in an area that receives full sun, meaning 6 or more hours of direct sun each day. Southern exposure is ideal for most sun-loving vegetables where they receive light during the majority of the day but are protected from the strongest afternoon sun.

Is it better to grow zucchini vertically? ›

Considering that zucchini plants tend to produce plentiful harvests without any assistance, increasing their yield may not be a priority. But growing vertically brings another enormous benefit by reducing the risks of powdery mildew, which is probably the most common issue squash growers face.

Do zucchini need a trellis to climb? ›

People often grow these vine vegetables on trellises or supports of all kinds. This is a cucumber plant growing on a wood support. Most cucurbit plants are veining and are often grown on trellises or other supports, but most often, zucchini is a bush plant, not requiring any vertical support.
